Sustainable Cleaning

At Skylark, we got into the garment care industry because we saw a great opportunity to do things better. The most widely used chemical in the dry cleaning industry is perchloroethylene or "Perc". You know it. It's what gives your clothes that cloying, airplane glue smell. More troubling, Perc is highly toxic to humans and a major source of environmental contamination. Learn more about the very serious health effects of Perc from this article from WebMD.

Skylark has never used Perc and never will. Instead, our garment care specialists employ a variety of non-toxic methods that are safe for people and the environment. These include some of the most advanced technologies in the world, like Greenearth Dry Cleaning and Professional Wet Cleaning. And we are not afraid to go old school to get that stain out, either; we are both huge fans and expert users of the many craftsman-like tricks of our industry.

GreenEarth Dry Cleaning

GreenEarth dry cleaning uses liquid silicone, an environmentally non-toxic, non-hazardous and extremely gentle alternative to Perc or other petroleum-based solvents. GreenEarth is widely tested, is safe for people and the environment, and also often works well for people with allergies or environmental sensitivities. And you will love that your clothes will come back smelling fresh and clean, without that typical noxious dry cleaning smell.

As gentle as the GreenEarth process is on the environment, it’s just as easy on your clothes. Colors won’t fade and whites won’t gray or yellow, even after repeated cleaning. Moreover, GreenEarth doesn’t cause shrinkage and clothes always retain their correct size and shape, no matter how many times you clean them. Fabrics are smooth and silky, and sweaters feel soft and supple again. And your clothes will look newer, longer.

Professional Wetcleaning

Professional wet cleaning is a safe, environmentally-friendly method of using water to clean typically non-washable garments. You would probably never consider tossing a wool suit or a silk tie in your washer at home. But at Skylark, our carefully-trained staff use advanced equipment, together with specialized detergents and additives, to clean a surprising number of “Dry Clean Only” garments. Water is wonderful for dissolving food, wine, blood or other common, water-based stains - far, far better in fact than typical dry cleaning solvents - making professional wet cleaning an indispensable tool in our cleaning arsenal.

A Craftsman’s Approach

While we love our green technology, we are also huge fans of the traditional methods of our trade. The swiss army knife of stain removal is the spotting board. Here, a seasoned dry cleaner or “spotter” uses steam, compressed air, vacuum, and other special tools, together with small doses of mild chemicals, to precisely target and remove tough stains. Small batch wet cleaning, custom soaks, digesters, and many other gentle but effective techniques are popular with our team.

In the end, Skylark's most most important assets are the knowledge, skill, and the careful attention of our staff. We have cleaned well over a million garments! So send us your trickiest problems, and let us show you what we can do.
